Sure, rainbows, sparkles, and dance music are all part of LGBTQIA Pride Month. However, make no mistake: this is also a moment to create an impression.
June is LGBTQ Pride Month, a month that is for remembering the Stonewall riots of 1969. While significant work has been achieved since then, research shows that LGBTQ employees face some of the same fears of retribution and stigmatization. Further, people who suffer from mental illness at work: have anxiety that their manager will treat them differently, doubt their capacity to perform in their position, discriminate against them, or pass them over for promotions and pay hikes.
That is why community support is so important now and in the future.
Between the drinking, dancing, and drag queens, it’s critical to remember to support LGBTQ people’s needs. There are various ways to make a difference this Pride Month, whether you’re straight or LGBTQ-identified.
Fight for LGBTQ people’s rights to policies and protections
From rolling back transgender people’s rights in public facilities to a religious liberty edict allowing corporations, including hospitals, to discriminate against LGBTQ individuals based on personal conviction, the administration has brought fresh and rising attacks on the LGBTQ community.
Learn about the policies and regulations that now legalize discrimination against LGBTQ people during Pride Month, and fight back. Make a call to your elected officials to voice your dissatisfaction. On June 11, join a local Equality March. Finally, express your displeasure by informing others about the policies that harm LGBTQ people in your state.
‘Treat people with love,’ says the adage
Experts agree that there is no one-size-fits-all strategy to allyship. Leading with love, care, and respect is the key.
Cato encourages others to inquire about people’s “wishes to be seen,” such as “what are your pronouns?” “What can I do to make you feel more at ease?” and “What can I do to make you feel more at ease?” can go a long way. Providing a secure location where people may listen without being judged can also help.
Participate in LGBTQ activities
When you’re a friend to an LGBT person, you should always remember to attend activities that are important to them. Pride parades and LGBTQ activities honor gay people’s existence and represent the optimism that society frequently overlooks.
Self-education is essential
Before you start supporting your buddy, you must educate yourself on the LGBTQ community as a whole, since you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings by saying something incorrect. They don’t need any more unnecessary or incorrect comments on their plate.
